The Kensico report card has sections for each subject area: the language arts on the left; math, science, and social studies in the center left; behavior and work habits in the center right; and the special subject areas on the right.

Each subject area has a number grade--the performance level, or how well the child is doing in that subject area--which corresponds with the grading scale used on the New York State tests. Each subject area is further divided into smaller components, which are given effort grades. The grading scales for both the performance level numbers and the effort grade letters are explained below.

Since we switch classes for math, that grade is often given by a different teacher than the homeroom teacher; the child's math teacher is indicated on the report card. There is another letter marked in the math area--the phase letter. This is an indication of where along the entire K-8 math curriculum the child is. The phase letters and their corresponding grade levels are also explained below.

There are four marking periods per year, as follows: First--September to mid-November, Second--mid-November to late January, Third--late January to mid-April, Fourth--mid-April to June. There is a parent/teacher conference at the end of the first marking period, and a student/parent/teacher conference at the end of the third marking period, where the students present work they have done during the year to their parents. Written comments take the place of conferences for the second and fourth marking periods.
