Trimming & Finishing the Interior & Exterior
Curbing for the driveway is in, and the sidewalk area is being prepared for the many commemorative bricks that have been sold as part of the Valhalla Schools Foundation's fundraising. The circle to the right will be grassed over and at its center will be the flagpole.

The north side of the 3rd grade wing one more time--now there is grass outside. The windows to the far right are of 2 of the 6 classrooms in that wing (the other 4 are the double classroom at the end of the wing and the 2 classrooms opposite the ones seen in this picture). To the right of that are the windows of the faculty room, and the last opening to the right is an exterior door at the end of the circular corridor.

The green tilework of this round area marks it as being at the end of the 4th grade wing. Each classroom wing has its own color scheme--yellow for 3rd, green for 4th, blue for 5th, and purple for BOCES. These colors are echoed in the tiles on the walls, the floor tiles, paint colors throughout the wing, and other smaller touches.

Atop each of these round spaces goes a skylight. The architects tried in many ways to bring as much natural light into the building--besides these distinctive skylights, there are the large window walls in each classroom, and other skylights in other areas such as the Gym and at the "T" of each classroom wing.

The complete effect of the round spaces at the end of each classroom wing can be gotten here--in addition to what is seen here, the terrazo floor of the circular corridor will switch from its usual neutral color to a circle of that wing's color under each skylight. In all, a most dramatic sight as someone walks along the corridor!

The cafeteria, looking more complete now that it has its windows in (or at least its window frames...it's a little hard to tell!). It is one of the largest spaces in the school with the exception of the Gym, and with its open wooden beams, also one of the most dramatic.

The Gym and Library is starting to get its facing of brick, though unlike other parts of the building, it wears a pattern formed from a variety of shades of brick (and which is echoed in the background of other sections of the website). On the brick wall to the left of the Library in this picture, the metal letters identifying the building as Kensico School will be put.

The copper roof is being finished up, the lampposts are ready to be installed, the curbing is in, as are the storm drains...a seeming million and one details are starting to come together at this point, and every day, something else is in place that wasn't there before.

From this photo's vantage point, it is hard to tell that this is not a finished building. Inside, though, many details remain--tile and trim work, built in cabinetry, painting... At least one wing and the cafeteria must be cleaned up and ready to occupy by September--the BOCES classes will be the first occupants of the building.

One of the double classrooms--and, no, that is not a giant hula hoop in the shot! The track for the movable partition can be seen at the top of the photo. These rooms can be used just as two single classrooms, but also have the opportunity to be opened up for large group or whole grade level activities, or can be utilised by 2 teachers interested in team teaching.

A view down from the school towards Columbus Avenue. This driveway is shared with District Office and the Special Ed Office. Across the sports field just out of the picture on the left is the Middle/High School. With the exception of the K-2 classes at Virginia Road, all of Valhalla's educational facilities share this "campus."
