The architects for the Kensico School project were developing ideas for the building as early as September of 1998. As you can see from the site plan of that date, the shape and siting of the building was quite different from what eventually was built. It had a circular drive like the final design, but where the current playground is was a single-story wing with the office, cafeteria, gym, specials classrooms, etc. The V-shaped section of the building was two stories, and was where the classrooms were located. In all, it would have been a very different, and more traditional and conventional approach to a new school.

| June 1999 floor planBy June of 1999, the design had developed into the basic form of what we know as Kensico School. There are 4 wings coming off a semi-circular main corridor, with a main entrance centered on the inner curve of the main part of the building. A closer look at the floorplan shows there were still some changes before the design was finalized: the spaces in the kitchen area were re-configured, the staff room was relocated along the end of the main corridor and another little office was created, doors into the cafeteria from the main entrance foyer were replaced by display cases, and some of the small offices by the reading and resource rooms had their doors re-located. It is also a bit unclear from the plan whether the end classrooms on the wings have the movable divider wall that they now have. The biggest difference from the building as it is now is in the area of the Library and Computer Lab...that whole end of the main corridor was re-designed, with a new outside entrance, the stairs relocated, and the dramatic skylight in the Library itself added. |

Outside, the configuration of the parking lots and playground is a bit different, and the building itself was shifted around a little bit several times to fit in better with some of the large trees on the property, but what was designed in June of 1999 was largely what was built a year or so later. |
